Recency Bias Exchange 2025
Hello, potential Recency Bias creators! Thank you and welcome to my letter post! :P I'm Mal or Mali (malachiical @ AO3 as well); I'll try to keep each individual section of this letter brief, and you should be able to skip to wherever you like with anchor links and/or just expand the parts relevant to you via cut. I hope our ids align and you have a blast writing, because I'm definitely looking forward to whatever you come up with!

You can also watch the first movie on Putlocker if you want more context on Riley's life so far, how the world works, etc., and it's a good introduction, but only Fear out of these three characters is in it!
Both movies are about an hour and a half long each.

All four videos together are less than 20 minutes total, and you can skip around to where the characters are actually talking onscreen. You can also leave the sound off because there's no voice acting and the YouTuber reads the dialogue out loud, unfortunately.)]
These two have such a fun dynamic, while they don't interact as much as some other characters in the second movie, what is there makes me so happy! I am a sucker for "anxious all the time (but affectionate)" and "blasé all the time (but with a soft spot)" and these two really do have such nice little moments towards one another.
I love how, even during her movie-long downward spiral, Anxiety obviously cared for her three friends and was supportive and affectionate, and how she obviously went out of her way to learn at least a little French to call Ennui "mon ami"! I love how, despite acting entirely bored and "too cool for anyone," Ennui was still paying attention to Anxiety (despite her words) and actually physically got up to help out (in her casual way) from time to time. And when Anxiety really started breaking down, Ennui was visibly worried along with the others!
(Plus, like, it's totally extracanon noncanon material, but there was recently an event introducing Ennui and Anxiety into the mobile game Disney Magic Kingdoms and they were really cute in it. Ennui immediately recognized signs that Anxiety was spiraling even when Anxiety wasn't physically present! She tracked her down to where she'd barricaded herself into a closet and talked her through breathing exercises to help calm her down, even tricking her into doing them halfway properly... while Anxiety was still inside the closet. And then made her lounge to calm down when she was still kinda freaking out! And it worked! And I'm emotional about it!)
I really like the idea of these two having this casual sort of history together, and bonding even further than they seem to already be in the movie... Either bonding due to the events of the movie (maybe Anxiety is trying to make up for everything, and/or Ennui is trying to check in and make sure Anxiety is okay now?), because they were already interested in each other (or one of them was interested before...), or maybe both! Anxiety encouraging Ennui to be a bit more motivated/engaged/social, or make her smile... maybe unintentionally getting her worked up... Ennui trying to find ways to help Anxiety relax and calm down, sometimes deadpan teasing or trolling her... These two could be so supportive, even if in a fumbling way, but I could also see them grating on each other sometimes too. They could have a really fun dynamic!
When it comes to Anxiety/Ennui/Fear, I love every possible combination of this, so:
For Anxiety/Fear, I like how much they have in common, how quickly Anxiety seemed to note how similar she and Fear's jobs were and how quickly Fear in turn determined that they were "gonna be friends." I like how in extra-canon stuff like Go to Sleep Anxiety! and concept art he does things like lend her his nightlight and teddy bear. And while I honestly didn't particularly like Fear's "I just think I can change her" line, I feel like the basic idea behind it of him agreeing with Joy that Anxiety wasn't a lost cause but instead someone just making the wrong choices is compelling because of that similarity between them; he might know how easy it is to get carried away with, well, fear and awfulizing?
For Ennui/Fear, they don't interact like at all, but honestly I kind of like the idea that Ennui has a "type" (even if Anxiety/Ennui isn't a thing in the fic you write). That she might fall into, in a friendship way at first, treating Fear similarly to how she treats Anxiety: being a bit dismissive and unhelpful on the surface but acting as a sort of calming/grounding presence and paying more attention and helping more, casually, than one might initially expect. And while I can easily imagine Fear being intimidated by Ennui at first, while she is at least kind of "cool," I feel like she's also kind of a poser and a bit of a dork. Obviously you don't have to do this but I had the mental image of them bonding over complaining about/razzing the dreams on Dream Duty like they're bad movies and it made me laugh. (And obviously you don't have to go with this but I've played with the idea before that Ennui is a trans woman who transitioned pre-movie, so if Fear realizes she's also a trans woman they could bond over that?)
And I feel like the three of them could really be fun as a trio, too! Anxiety and Fear being able to relax just a bit because they know the other has their back, but also sometimes working each other up more until Ennui has to try to chill the whole scene back down. Anxiety encouraging Fear to be less intimidated by Ennui, by telling him more about her or encouraging them to spend more time together. Ennui, as I said, having a Type and it's apparently "very highly strung but very professional muppet." Overall I love them being an "equal" poly relationship where Anxiety/Ennui, Anxiety/Fear, and Ennui/Fear all like/love and are into each other, but I can also get behind a more "V" shaped relationship -- so long as Anxiety or even Ennui is at the center, rather than Anxiety and Ennui both being into Fear but not each other. I'm just not into that idea.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (Manga)
Kanamori Sayaka/Mizusaki Tsubame
[Where you can find the manga for free online: Here! (It has, I believe, all of the most recently released chapters through Volume 9, totaling 68 chapters in all.)
If you want, you can also check out the anime here (English subs) or here (English dub). This isn't at all necessary since I'm requesting the manga, but I still recommend it because it's very pretty. Plus the original Japanese voice acting is definitely how I hear the characters in my head! There are 12 episodes total and it covers the first three volumes of the manga, but a few things are changed around slightly.]
Holy shit I'm so into these two; I'm just enamored by so many things about their dynamic! I love the way they notice and comment on little things about each other: Mizusaki commenting on how long Kanamori's legs are, and asking if she'd gotten a haircut when it had nothing to do with anything that was happening or the conversation at the moment, and remembering how Kanamori's highest score was in math; Kanamori commenting on how Mizusaki really seems to like to be up high and, in the anime, noticing that Mizusaki had a tan line on her leg. I love how, early on, Mizusaki seems delighted by growing to understand Kanamori, whenever she figures out a little more about how she thinks and works. I love how Mizusaki at the very start is the one who repeatedly pulls Kanamori into getting involved in the imaginary world stuff, and Kanamori just goes along with it both times, and how Kanamori in turn physically carries a knocked-out Mizusaki during the windmill imagination sequence.
I love the little close moments the two have, like how Mizusaki clings onto Kanamori's arm during that storm, the times they look to each other over Asakusa's head, the times they argue and lean to get in each others' faces a little bit. I love how for their first anime project, Mizusaki gives in to Kanamori's suggestion specifically when she notices how frustrated Kanamori is and how much work she's putting in herself. I love how sometimes they finish each others' sentences.
I love the chapter where Mizusaki was like "hey please go do my modeling job for today Kanamori!" because I can just imagine she wanted to see her model for a bit. I love the possibility of Mizusaki, as a character artist, enjoying sketching Kanamori. I love the "opposites attract" element of them, with their attitudes and lives and passions being so different... Including Mizusaki being so open in the club but putting on a model mask, while Kanamori is always herself but at the same time is also very restrained and isn't great at openly caring.
I also really love the current arc where they're down in THE LAWLESS UNDERGROUND UNDER THEIR SCHOOL literally called the Den of Evil, taking on a new member and figuring out what to work on next while also working with the local sheriff to do bounty hunting to earn the special money the Den of Evil uses for their own damn economy down there. That's amazing. There's so much potential to this part of the story and for things the characters could get up to and they're still learning more about each other! A fic wouldn't need to be set during the current arc but Kanamori/Mizusaki fic should exist set during this arc is what I'm saying. :D
In summary: These two are really good, okay, and I really want them to kiss about it.

Watching all of the above pertinent parts would take about 7 and a half hours, but you can easily knock it down to about 2 hours and 5 minutes by just watching their main routes: The Nightmare in the first video (2:12:52-2:40:21), The Spectre in the second video (1:39:37-2:28:30) and the Princess and the Dragon video, and The Wraith variation with both of them (31:00-48:28). Or watch whatever bits of whatever playthroughs you like...
Or, of course, play it yourself; just go with whatever works for you! :D]
These two really, really intrigue me. They don't get to interact that much, but they're quite interesting in The Wraith route, and also have moments in some of the other routes -- and some similarities and general qualities -- that make me think that they could really catch the other's attention if given more opportunity.
For one thing, they are both very aware of and surprisingly in control of their bodies. (Well, their shared body. The protagonist's body. Let's just say "their bodies" for simplicity.) Voice of the Cold constantly talks about choosing to just stop feeling things, both emotions and any negative physical sensations; their back-and-forth of "Do we have to explain to you why pain is bad?" "You have to explain to yourself why it isn't," is VERY cool. But despite Voice of the Paranoid being obviously high-strung, he also has an immense amount of steel to him, not only manually running the body's autonomic nervous system during The Nightmare route, but also showing up specifically to keep Voice of the Broken in check during The Apotheosis route after Broken let The Tower into their mind which led to their death.
There are also little details, such as the fact that Cold usually shows up after you kill the Princess in cold blood and then yourself, and Paranoid also encourages killing yourself if you become trapped in The Nightmare route due to killing her. This actually leads to Cold showing up... And interestingly, before that, if the protagonist says to the Hero and the Paranoid that it'd be fine to be stuck in the void forever because they're the best company, Paranoid says, "Oh, you could do better than us," and that's right before Cold comes into the picture. In The Wraith route, he and Cold and Hero and the protagonist have to all work together to toss their body into the void with The Wraith in it, if they choose that route, and the "everyone on the count of three" moment Paranoid takes charge of is just neat.
And in a general sense, I really think they could... see something interesting in each other. Paranoid is nervy and definitely hasn't shut off his emotions at all, but he also has that aforementioned steel and sharp control over himself/his body/The Body, that might be even more intriguing and impressive based on how unexpected it is. And Cold is a dangerous person, yes, but is actually less dangerous to the other voices than someone like the Broken or even the Smitten, and might also be easier to predict than someone like the Opportunist or even the Hunted -- you know exactly what his danger is, if he's going to be dangerous. And at the same time, Paranoid seems to trust the other voices in a way he doesn't trust anyone "other," and Cold seems to want to help the other voices, often trying to give them advice on how to get through situations without breaking down. There's an automatic sort of rapport there that makes it more likely they'd get close to each other than if they were just ordinary people with their same personalities.
Also, speaking of that, I do love the bodysharing and would be super into that if you want to roll with it, but I also love a theoretical post-canon situation where maybe the voices are all getting their own bodies. You don't even have to get into how and why they have different bodies if you want to do that; just handwaving it would be fine!

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (Manga)
Kanamori Sayaka/Mizusaki Tsubame
[Where you can find the manga for free online: Here! (It has, I believe, all of the most recently released chapters through Volume 9, totaling 68 chapters in all.)
If you want, you can also check out the anime here (English subs) or here (English dub). This isn't at all necessary since I'm requesting the manga, but I still recommend it because it's very pretty. Plus the original Japanese voice acting is definitely how I hear the characters in my head! There are 12 episodes total and it covers the first three volumes of the manga, but a few things are changed around slightly.]
Holy shit I'm so into these two; I'm just enamored by so many things about their dynamic! I love the way they notice and comment on little things about each other: Mizusaki commenting on how long Kanamori's legs are, and asking if she'd gotten a haircut when it had nothing to do with anything that was happening or the conversation at the moment, and remembering how Kanamori's highest score was in math; Kanamori commenting on how Mizusaki really seems to like to be up high and, in the anime, noticing that Mizusaki had a tan line on her leg. I love how, early on, Mizusaki seems delighted by growing to understand Kanamori, whenever she figures out a little more about how she thinks and works. I love how Mizusaki at the very start is the one who repeatedly pulls Kanamori into getting involved in the imaginary world stuff, and Kanamori just goes along with it both times, and how Kanamori in turn physically carries a knocked-out Mizusaki during the windmill imagination sequence.
I love the little close moments the two have, like how Mizusaki clings onto Kanamori's arm during that storm, the times they look to each other over Asakusa's head, the times they argue and lean to get in each others' faces a little bit. I love how for their first anime project, Mizusaki gives in to Kanamori's suggestion specifically when she notices how frustrated Kanamori is and how much work she's putting in herself. I love how sometimes they finish each others' sentences.
I love the chapter where Mizusaki was like "hey please go do my modeling job for today Kanamori!" because I can just imagine she wanted to see her model for a bit. I love the possibility of Mizusaki, as a character artist, enjoying sketching Kanamori. I love the "opposites attract" element of them, with their attitudes and lives and passions being so different... Including Mizusaki being so open in the club but putting on a model mask, while Kanamori is always herself but at the same time is also very restrained and isn't great at openly caring.
I also really love the current arc where they're down in THE LAWLESS UNDERGROUND UNDER THEIR SCHOOL literally called the Den of Evil, taking on a new member and figuring out what to work on next while also working with the local sheriff to do bounty hunting to earn the special money the Den of Evil uses for their own damn economy down there. That's amazing. There's so much potential to this part of the story and for things the characters could get up to and they're still learning more about each other! A fic wouldn't need to be set during the current arc but Kanamori/Mizusaki fic should exist set during this arc is what I'm saying. :D
In summary: These two are really good, okay, and I really want them to kiss about it.

- I'm fine with even non-canonical background ships and background poly so long as neither Kanamori nor Mizusaki are a part of it
- NAME STUFF! Nicknames, honorifics, just how they address each other in general! Mizusaki tends to call Kanamori "Kanamori-san" and Kanamori tends to call her "Mizusaki-shi" in return. The entire club seems to be on a last-name basis; even Asakusa and Kanamori, who've been "friends" for three years, call each other "Kanamori-shi/Kanamori-kun" and "Asakusa-shi." I could love both the characters sticking to surnames like that even when getting closer/after getting together, whether they stick with "-san/-shi" or switch over to "-kun/-chan," but I could also enjoy them toying with first name basis whether they stick with it or not! (Do they like it? Or does it sound weird to them and they switch back?) Whatever you think works here could be really fun!

Watching all of the above pertinent parts would take about 7 and a half hours, but you can easily knock it down to about 2 hours and 5 minutes by just watching their main routes: The Nightmare in the first video (2:12:52-2:40:21), The Spectre in the second video (1:39:37-2:28:30) and the Princess and the Dragon video, and The Wraith variation with both of them (31:00-48:28). Or watch whatever bits of whatever playthroughs you like...

These two really, really intrigue me. They don't get to interact that much, but they're quite interesting in The Wraith route, and also have moments in some of the other routes -- and some similarities and general qualities -- that make me think that they could really catch the other's attention if given more opportunity.
For one thing, they are both very aware of and surprisingly in control of their bodies. (Well, their shared body. The protagonist's body. Let's just say "their bodies" for simplicity.) Voice of the Cold constantly talks about choosing to just stop feeling things, both emotions and any negative physical sensations; their back-and-forth of "Do we have to explain to you why pain is bad?" "You have to explain to yourself why it isn't," is VERY cool. But despite Voice of the Paranoid being obviously high-strung, he also has an immense amount of steel to him, not only manually running the body's autonomic nervous system during The Nightmare route, but also showing up specifically to keep Voice of the Broken in check during The Apotheosis route after Broken let The Tower into their mind which led to their death.
There are also little details, such as the fact that Cold usually shows up after you kill the Princess in cold blood and then yourself, and Paranoid also encourages killing yourself if you become trapped in The Nightmare route due to killing her. This actually leads to Cold showing up... And interestingly, before that, if the protagonist says to the Hero and the Paranoid that it'd be fine to be stuck in the void forever because they're the best company, Paranoid says, "Oh, you could do better than us," and that's right before Cold comes into the picture. In The Wraith route, he and Cold and Hero and the protagonist have to all work together to toss their body into the void with The Wraith in it, if they choose that route, and the "everyone on the count of three" moment Paranoid takes charge of is just neat.
And in a general sense, I really think they could... see something interesting in each other. Paranoid is nervy and definitely hasn't shut off his emotions at all, but he also has that aforementioned steel and sharp control over himself/his body/The Body, that might be even more intriguing and impressive based on how unexpected it is. And Cold is a dangerous person, yes, but is actually less dangerous to the other voices than someone like the Broken or even the Smitten, and might also be easier to predict than someone like the Opportunist or even the Hunted -- you know exactly what his danger is, if he's going to be dangerous. And at the same time, Paranoid seems to trust the other voices in a way he doesn't trust anyone "other," and Cold seems to want to help the other voices, often trying to give them advice on how to get through situations without breaking down. There's an automatic sort of rapport there that makes it more likely they'd get close to each other than if they were just ordinary people with their same personalities.
Also, speaking of that, I do love the bodysharing and would be super into that if you want to roll with it, but I also love a theoretical post-canon situation where maybe the voices are all getting their own bodies. You don't even have to get into how and why they have different bodies if you want to do that; just handwaving it would be fine!

- SECOND SPECIFIC AU IDEA: Spectre and Wraith (formerly Nightmare) want to get married, but since they're both ghosts they have to possess people for the ceremony (and possibly for sex). Spectre possesses Cold and Wraith possesses Paranoid, willingly or not in both cases, and Cold and Paranoid end up married too due to it. Either Cold and Paranoid choose to have sex after, need to consummate their marriage after due to some law or magic compulsion, and/or are still at least semi-possessed while Spectre and Wraith have sex with (at least primarily) each other.

- Come to that, the strong hints that the voices are actually developing beyond their named traits and becoming their own more rounded individual people: Contrarian in The Stranger version of the "And? What happens next?" ending, Hero protesting being just "a shard of broken glass," Paranoid apologizing for his "fear response" in Razor, all of them wanting to avoid individual death and continue existing
- The idea of the voices surviving even in the new "Your New World" ending, just being separated completely and irreversibly from the new god that is the Long Quiet, and having to deal with this new world now
- How Paranoid sometimes seems to be able to get Cold's whole deal, like in the Apotheosis chapter during the tearing sequence
- On the other side of the coin, Cold's apparent desire to feel things sometimes (most notably in both Grey chapters), as well as his surprising moments of feeling and empathy during the Adversary!Fury chapter
- How both of them seem to be able to tell the truth of the Construct/the Long Quiet sometimes!

- TBH the idea of either or both of these characters being kind of a mess in any sort of normal life/post-Construct scenario. Cold not having any survival instinct and not protecting himself in fights, going long stretches without eating or sleeping (or preening if they still have feathers) because he finds it boring, having trouble feeling or identifying or expressing his own emotions; Paranoid having Issues With Food and/or all kinds of sleep-related problems, having major trust issues, having hallucinations, overpreening if they still have feathers, his increased snappishness when freaked out... And so on.
- That said, character growth, making each other better, and balancing each other out are also loved! As well as Taking Chances and going outside of their comfort zones with each other they might not otherwise!
- Pretty much any of the AUs I've opted into? I honestly also love the idea of, post-canon, the voices (and vessels?) being dropped into the world outside the Construct and those "AUs" just being... what that world is like. So both AU and not!

- Not a ship, but I love both characters' friendship with Hero; the idea of Cold being friends with Contrarian, Hunted, and Skeptic; and the idea of Paranoid being friends with (post-Apotheosis) Broken, Hunted, and Opportunist
- NAME STUFF. Names in general! Nicknames and pet names if you can make it work for them! None of the voices really refer to one another by name or even by description in canon; do they still think of each other as "Voice of the Cold," or just "the Paranoid," or just "Cold," or something like "the paranoid one" or even (as in canon) things like "the jumpy one"? Do they choose names when out of the Construct, either in general or if they're pretending to be human? How might these two come to refer to one another, think about one another? (I like the nickname Para, tbh, even if Cold doesn't use it himself!)
